As interview season has started and most residency programs have sent out initial interview invites, now is an important time to re-examine the #ApplySmart guidelines for #PedsMatch22.
But why is this important? The reality is simple, applicants will ultimately only match to a maximum of one residency program, so holding on to excess interviews does a disservice both to programs looking to fill their residency positions and to other applicants who are patiently waiting for additional interview slots to open up.
So how can you do your part? Examine the guidelines from the APPD below, and contact programs to release excess interviews. Importantly, you should also discuss the number of interviews you should ultimately take and number of programs you should rank with a trusted pediatrics adviser. The below guidelines are adapted directly from the May 2021 Letter to Our Pediatrics Community which can be found in its entirety here.
It is important to recognize that the following studies only take into account some, but not all, of the important aspects of a pediatrics residency application. Therefore, our strongest recommendation is that students should discuss their individual applications with their advisors.
A study of LCME‐accredited allopathic medical students, found that if students have no academic difficulty (e.g., course failures, Step failures, other academic probation/remediation), they only need to rank 10 programs to have 99% match (Vinci 2017)"
Data from NRMP Charting the Outcomes will help students and pediatric advisors assess how an individual student’s application characteristics will affect their likelihood of matching.
Let programs know at least 2 weeks ahead of time if canceling an interview. This will allow programs to fill these slots with alternative candidates.
To reiterate each student should discuss their individual situation with their pediatric advisors.
As a group of applicants, we have the ability to support one another's goals of matching into pediatrics this season. Please do your part to not hoard interviews and share your commitment to your future #tweetiatrician colleagues on social media by posting this image with the text below:
I pledge my support of the APPD’s #ApplySmart recommendations during the #PedsMatch22 residency application and interview season! Because we're better together.
